BCA is involved in two aspects of insurance for cavers: travel and public liability (PL).

The travel policy is not actually administered by BCA, because the rules set by the Financial Services Authority mean we cannot be seen to be selling insurance of this type. However, BCA has an arrangement with a commercial broker, Towergate Insurance, which ensures that a policy which meets the needs of cavers travelling abroad for holidays and expeditions is available. BCA receives a small annual income from Towergate in return for introducing its members to this product.

There are no proposal forms for the travel policy - if you need cover, please call Towergate's Fareham office on 01329 228789 and they will take your details and a credit card number over the phone.

The contacts for the BCA scheme at Towergate are Richard Gibb or Wendy McElroy.

The PL Scheme is fully administered by BCA and is integral to BCA Membership for individuals. The fundamental purpose of the policy is to indemnify landowners over whose land cavers need permission to pass in order to visit certain sites around the UK, but it also provides for liability insurance for BCA members. The limit of indemnity is £2 million.

It's important for BCA members to understand how this scheme works. Basically, BCA purchases a single annual policy which covers all members and member organisations for all of the activitities which have been agreed between ourselves and the insurer (details are found in the policy documents). We then divide the cost of that insurance up between our members by seeking differing levels of contribution from active cavers, inactive cavers, clubs, access controlling bodies etc.

Currently information about the scheme on this website is confined primarily to the insurance documents page since this site is new and we have not yet been able to prepare all of the available information in the new formats required for this website. This process will be taking place over the next few weeks.
