The BCA supports the training of cavers in two ways: by administrating qualifications for caving instructors who wish to teach caving skills to the public, and by providing, facilitating, and funding training directly to cavers.
Training for Cavers
Caving requires the use of many complex techniques and skills, ranging from Single Rope Technique (SRT), rescue, first aid, surveying and mapping, photography, conservation, scientific research amongst others. Proper knowledge of any of these techniques can only really be gained by dedicated training or through hands on experience. Some clubs or individuals are lucky to have access to great facilities and experience to learn these skills, and some do not. For everyone, there are always new aspects of caving to learn.
The Training Committee exist to facilitate and advise on all aspects of training. They arrange training events nationally, and assist with funding for groups to arrange their own events.
Upcoming training events will be listed on the events page, or you can get in touch with us at for more information.
Caving Qualifications
The BCA offers two nationally recognised awards for caving instructors; the Local Cave and Mine Leader Assessment Scheme (LCMLA) and the Cave Instructor Certificate (CIC).
These qualifications are maintained by the Qualifications Management Committee.
