John Hey tells me...
There is a mistake is in the receiver theoretical drawing. The pot VR3 and C59 are shown going to the centre (4.5V) line whereas they connect to earth. The PC board is correct.

Aha! I have finally located the note from John Hey on the PCB mod...
On the top of the transmitter board, there is a track which fuses with a
plated through hole which it shouldn't. John usually clears it with a sharp drill before shipping the boards.
